TR4 Judging/Originality Guide
I have just 2 quick general questions regarding the TR4 Judging/Originality Guide. Specific questions will come later.
1. Page 11 - (Originality Deduction Guide) (Engine) - Engine serial number exposure incorrect. What exactly does this mean?
2. Page 74 - (Front Suspension) - Ensure a dust shield is fitted. Those tend to be lost over the years. What dust shield is this in reference to?
Thanks,
Gary
Gary,
Regarding 1. Having been a judge for underhood/engine all I can say is numerious times we have come across TR's showing in Concours that have variuos serial nunbersfor the engine & head that cannot be read for various reasons. I always have mine nice and clean so they can be easily read.
Regards,
Darrell
Regarding the engine number: Thanks, that makes sense.
I still would like to know about the "dust shield". I've looked through the Spare Parts Catalog, TRF, Moss, etc. and can't find any mention of a dust shield in the front suspension sections.
Also, one last question. On page 12 of the TR4 Judging Guide it states "Vacuum line routing or dressing (retained at water pump) incorrect." Was there ever a retainer at the water pump or should this actually state "retained at thermostat housing"?
Gary
I thought the dust shield was simply the shield for the rotors - originally that shield was not used I believe.
That was my first thought. But the statement in question is under the suspension section, not the brake section. And more importantly, I just can't see any way they would "tend to be lost over the years". They can't fall completely off and you have to remove quite a few components before purposely removing this piece.
Documentation on the rotor dust shield is rather scarce, but in his books, Bill Piggott states it was added at TS27689 (Feb 58). I have a service bulletin dated 19 March 58 that states S-T will soon be adding a dirt deflector to the inside of the rotors for wire wheel equipped cars. But in any case, they were standard on all TR4s.

"They can't fall completely off and you have to remove quite a few components before purposely removing this piece."
Perhaps not, but they surely can rust away and previous owners may not have been aware or otherwise too concerned about replacing them.

"Dust shield" could refer to the rubber rings at each end of the lower inner fulcrum points on the front suspension.
With brakes it could refer to rubber plugs for the adjuster slots in the rear backing plates.
