Ferguson TEA engine applicability to TR-3/4
Seeking a little info. I have both a TR-3A and a TR-4. I am wondering about the possibility of using a strong running short block from a Ferguson TEA mated with a TR Head and manifold/carbs. Has any one tried this? I understand their lineage and manufacture to be almost identical (The TEA engine was manuf. by Standard for Ferguson). Appreciate any comments and advise
I don't have it in front of me for reference, but I didn't think the blocks were quite the same - the Ferguson engine was based on a Vanguard block, which I believe had a significantly lower horsepower rating than the TR engines - different head bolts, and perhaps internal webbing is stouter in the Triumph blocks. Someone more knowledgeable can correct me I hope. Personally, I think you'd be better off hunting for a donor block and just do a rebuild - they are still common enough to show up either free or for very little money and with the wet liner design you pretty much are guaranteed to have a good starting point.
I agree with Randall. TR3 blocks aren't exactly a rare commodity. These are wet liners, so unless a block is cracked or damaged badly they can almost always be rehabbed. In fact if you are within driving distance to SE PA, I have a block you can have for the trouble of getting it out of my basement. If your interested, send me a PM.
Thanks for your reply and information. I am within driving distance to Pa. (I am in extreme northern Vermont) and would like to accept your generous offer. Looking forward to hearing from you and thanks for the info and offer
