TR4 Hood Adjustment Bumpers

I find it rather odd that none of the larger suppliers offer the flat hood (bonnet) bumper that was used on most TR4's. There were 2 for the hood and one for the torque reaction bracket. So, it would seem that the demand would be there if the correct parts were offered instead of just the cone shaped ones.

So, does anyone know of a source for these? And if not, can anyone supply a good photo or description? I know the rubber sits in a steel cup, but is the rubber part absolutely flat or slightly domed? Is it solid or does it have a center depression? What is the diameter and thickness of the rubber pad? I've scrounged up a few good bumpers missing the rubber pad and with some help maybe I can locate the pads or make my own.

Moss lists this part #282-130, $3.95. It is completely flat, rubber part 3/4 " high.

TRF lists the original early TR4 buffer, 650325,  as NLS, and does not offer an alternative.

However, they do offer the TR3, 3A original flat rubber buffer, CD24540.  This may work for you. I would check with "uncle Dave" first.

I think I have the Moss version on my car - not exactly like the picture Tag shows from TRF - but shorter and better than the TR3 option in my opinioin.

I found that the bumpers supplied by the usual suspects were incorrect - too big and too high. I rebuilt my original bumpers using rubber sheeting of the correct thickness and a 15/16" hole punch to make new inserts. It tool some fiddling, but the results are correct. My car is in the shop right now having the rear axle oil seals replaced, but if there is interest, I can post pictures. The only problem with my original hood bumpers was that the rubber had deteriorated. If you can find some originals, you can make new rubber inserts.

Smokey  I think you broke the code.  Anytime you can restore an original part you're ahead of the game.

Thanks to all, especially Smokey. That's the approach I would prefer. I'm far from finishing this project, but I am gathering parts to be plated and these were among them.

Smokey, do you happen to remember the correct thickness? I have a small stash of rubber sheeting but will look further if I don't have the correct thickness.

Hi Gary, I can't find the sheet rubber I used - probably too much house cleaning. My car is away right now, otherwise I could measure the height on my bumpers. I used my originals as the template. My car should be back sometime next week, if you care to wait that long. Otherwise, some others may be able to help by measuring.

Thanks. I don't need it any time soon. I'm still filling up a bucket to send to be plated, including the bumper parts. I just wanted to add the info to my notes.

Hi Gary, I got my car back, and it was probably a good idea to change the rear axle oil seals before we embark on some 1000 mile trips this fall - they turned out to be the original rawhide seals from the factory. They had lasted almost 50 years, so no complaints, and no serious leaks, just changed as a precaution. Anyway, on topic: I measured the hood adjustment bumpers, and the total height, including the metal cup, was 0.67". I can' t measure the thickness of the metal cup, but my guess would be that the rubber is 5/8" thick, i.e. 0.625". Hope that helps:-).

Thank you very much. That was most helpful.

While I've got your attention, I just sent you a PM about another subject.

Thanks again,
Gary
